Queen of Apostles to celebrate environmentally friendly renovations as a result of generous grant

Queen of Apostles Catholic School in Alexandria recently received a significant donation from the Traylor/Shea Joint Venture, allowing the school to undertake significant renovations.

As a result of the $300,000 donation, the school was able to renovate its bathrooms and gymnasium. These renovations helped the school improve its carbon footprint and brought state-of-the-art technology to a small school tucked in a residential neighborhood in the West End of Alexandria.

Queen of Apostles Catholic School currently enrolls 159 students. It is one of the most economically and culturally diverse schools in the Diocese.

The recent renovations have improved the school and gymnasium in the following ways:

  • The new gymnasium LED lighting has nearly doubled interior light levels and improved the color rendering in the gymnasium, which serves as a critical event space for both the school and the parish.
    • These lights come with a very long-life expectancy. Unlike the previous fixtures, these new fixtures will not require changing for many years.
    • Additionally, the new lights will save the school about 60% in energy costs, which will add up to thousands of dollars per year in savings.
  • The new plumbing fixtures save water using sensors and minimize failure more effectively than traditional/mechanical valves.

The donation is part of a larger grant from the Joint Venture which also included funds for The Basilica School of Saint Mary in Alexandria.

Traylor Bros., Inc. and J.F. Shea Construction, Inc. have a long-standing history of giving back to the communities that employ their services. The Traylor/Shea Joint Venture is constructing the large CSO sewer tunnel in Alexandria to help clean up the Potomac River.

On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, officials from the school, the Diocese and the Traylor/Shea Joint Venture will be on-site to tour the renovations. Students will take part in the celebration being held in the gymnasium.
